A FRESH LOOK AT POINSETTIAS

Bright red poinsettias are traditionally associated with Christmas; it's almost a ritual to pick one up when shopping for presents. But just because they are so familiar, doesn't mean they have to be boring, naff, folksy - or even red!

The Flowers & Plants Association has some gorgeous ideas for your poinsettia - adding class with stylish containers, displaying in natural or dramatic ways, or adding fun decorative trims.

Classic flame-red poinsettias give a cosy welcoming feel to any room; while newer peach and purple colours are a beautiful focal point - and talking point. Go for a flamboyant eyecatching tree poinsettia this year, or try a group of tiny bonsai poinsettias - very charming.

Poinsettias don't have to be saved up until Christmas, you can enjoy them right now! If you buy from reputable retailers and look after them well they will glow with colour right through the grey winter months.

As Mexican natives, they can cope with central heating but they should not be placed directly next to radiators or open fires. Water when the compost is moderately dry but do not overwater them as this will cause their leaves to drop.
