Poinsettias
The bright red bracts of poinsettias
are traditionally associated with Christmas, so much so that it is almost a ritual
to pick one up on the annual trip to buy the Christmas tree. The bracts are actually
coloured leaves, while the real flowers are the little insignificant yellow pips
in the centre. Some new varieties even have variegated leaves, as well as coloured
bracts. Some growers now produce them in pink, white, cream and marbled varieties.
Why not be adventurous with your poinsettia and dress it with foliage
or decorations to give it a really festive look. Be creative and individual by
using interesting containers. Show off your poinsettia to best effect by opting
for a container that matches your interiors or the theme of your other Christmas
decorations. The poinsettia
originates from Mexico where it is called Flower of the Holy Night. They
therefore cope very well with central heating! In the wild they can reach the
size of large bushes, or even small trees; in British homes they will not outgrow
their space. Some people keep them from one year to the next in hope they will
'reflower', but to get poinsettias to do this is quite complicated. Far better
to buy a fresh one next year - perhaps in a different shade this time?
