St. George's Day

Celebrate the National Day of England on April 23rd with the symbol of its patron saint, St. George - a rich red rose. Roses have been steeped in meaning for centuries, especially the red rose, which is most popularly given as an emblem of love on St. Valentine's Day. They're tipped to be the hottest flower of the Summer, but why wait until then? Roses are quintessentially English, with the term 'English Rose' being a symbol of England from Tudor times but now referring to a girl with a natural, clear complexion. Cheer up your home and celebrate your nationality with a beautiful bunch of roses. Check the 'Where to Buy' section to find your very own English-grown rose.

April 23 is a special day overseas, too. El día de la rosa (The Day of the Rose) is a romantic holiday celebrated in Catalan and Barcelona. Since medieval times, men have presented their wives or girlfriends with a rose, and the women in return gave their men a book. The practice is now more general and roses and books are exchanged between loved ones and friends as well as lovers, so it would be difficult to walk down La Rambla and see a woman without a rose in her hand! It is estimated that 4 million roses are sold on this day.
